For forestry
PFERD has developed application-based file shapes, file cuts, and sharpening tools for use in forestry, all perfectly suited for manually sharpening chain saws.
Chains wear down naturally when in use. The chain has to be sharpened on a regular basis to ensure the motorized saw delivers an optimum cutting performance, and to make working with the saw as safe and ergonomic as possible.
Tips:
- Manual sharpening is more economical and much gentler than machine-based sharpening and can prolong the operating life of the chain saw.
- Timely sharpening requires less material to be removed and the sharpening time is considerably reduced.
Chain saw files, round
Round file for manual sharpening of saw chains with precise spiral cut for outstanding sharpness and particularly long service life. For fast, score-free sharpening of saw teeth. In comparison to machine sharpening, these files remove stock sparingly without the thermal strain caused by friction on the metal.

Filing Clamp

How to select the right file diameter
Calculating the chain pitch:
Chain pitch is calculated by measuring the distance between any three consecutive rivets, and then dividing the result by two. (Point of reference is the middle of the rivet) Dimensions given in inch.
Calculate file diameter: Chain pitch - file diameter
- 1/4" - 5/32"
- .325" - 11/64"-3/16"
- 3/8" - 13/64"-7/32"
- .404" - 7/32"
- 3/4" - 5/16"
- 3/8"LP (Low Profile) - 5/32"
Notes:
- For Low Profile chains, observe the respective manufacturer specifications.
- Also adhere to the chain saw manufacturers' specifications with regard to cut and the file diameter.
- Always wear suitable gloves and safety goggles when sharpening a saw chain.
